Sulaiman (Solomon)Unveiling the Wisdom and Power of a Righteous King
The Life of Prophet Sulaiman
Prophet Sulaiman, often referred to as Solomon, is a significant figure in Islamic tradition, recognized as one of the 25 Prophets mentioned in the Quran. His name appears 17 times throughout the sacred text, underscoring his importance in the Islamic faith.
He is unique in that he held the dual role of Prophet and King, belonging to Bani Israel (children of Israel) where Israel is Yacoub (Jacob), the son of Isaac son of Ibrahim (Abraham). Sulaiman inherited his prophetic and regal responsibilities from his father, Prophet Dawud (David), and was later succeeded by Prophet Ilyas (Elijah).
Early Life and Wisdom of Prophet Sulaiman
From a very young age, the wisdom of Prophet Sulaiman was evident. At young age, he showcased his exceptional judgment during a dispute presented before his father, Prophet Dawud. The case involved a grape field consumed by the sheep of another man. While the initial judgment favored the grape owner, young Sulaiman offered a more equitable solution that involved shared responsibility, demonstrating his understanding of justice. His father praised Allah for granting such discernment to his young son, a story briefly referenced in the Quran.
The Prophethood and Kingship of Sulaiman
After the passing of Prophet Dawud, Sulaiman assumed leadership over the Israelites as both their King and Prophet. His inheritance was not material wealth but the divinely sanctioned kingship, illustrating the principle that Prophets do not leave behind earthly possessions. A Hadith points out that the property of Apostles should not be inherited but allocated for charitable use, emphasizing the spiritual rather than material legacies left behind by such revered figures.
Trials and Challenges
A significant test of Sulaiman’s faith came when he became preoccupied with the beauty of his horses, allowing prayer time to lapse. Affected by his distraction, he acknowledged his lapse and sought forgiveness from Allah, pleading for a kingdom that would endure. His repentance was accepted, and he once again reaffirmed his commitment to servitude and righteousness.
On another occasion Sulaiman was put to the test when he decided to mate with most of his wives but forgot to put the will of Allah in his intention saying ‘God’s willing’ which part of the belief of any prophet or a believer. The result was one sick baby put on his chair who died soon later. Sulaiman prayed for forgiveness of this incident and Allah forgave him. Sulaiman then asked Allah to give him power and kingdom that would never be given to anyone else. Allah accepted Sulaiman’s request.
Gifts from Allah
Upon receiving the Prophethood and Kingship, Sulaiman prayed to Allah for a kingdom unmatched by any before or after him. His supplication was answered, and he was blessed with wisdom, control over the winds, and dominion over Jinn, alongside unique gifts like the understanding of the language of birds and animals. Despite these extraordinary abilities, Sulaiman remained deeply humble and committed to serving Allah, reflecting his status as an exemplary servant of the Almighty.
Sulaiman’s encounter with ants
During his reign, Sulaiman encountered a moment that illustrated his unique ability to communicate with all creatures. Upon traveling with his army, he heard an ant caution its fellow ants to take cover from the advancing troops. The ant said ‘Oh, ants go into your homes, so that Sulaiman and his soldier won’t crush you unintentionally’ This moment led Sulaiman to express gratitude and seek further guidance from Allah, demonstrating both his humility and his commitment to righteousness.
The Story of the Queen of Sheba
In one of the most well-known accounts involving Prophet Sulaiman, he received news from a Hoopoe bird about the magnificent kingdom of Sheba, governed by the Queen Bilkis.
Ons day Sulaiman was checking on his birds and animals and said ‘Where is the Hoopoe, is he absent? I will punish him for being absent without permission unless it comes back with clear justification’
The Hoopoe came back after a while and informed Sulaiman about his findings. It said, ‘I came across Saba’ (Sheba) and I found out that they are ruled by a queen. The queen and her people are worshipping the Sun in place of Allah’
The Queen, whose kingdom was rich and prosperous, was led astray into worshiping the Sun. Sulaiman told the Hoopoe to drop a message from him to this queen that read ‘This is from king Sulaiman, come down to me as Muslims’
Upon receiving a letter from Sulaiman, she was compelled to respond and eventually sent gifts to him as a gesture of diplomacy. Notably, Sulaiman rejected her gifts, emphasizing that what he possessed far surpassed any material wealth and expressing only a desire for her to turn towards the worship of Allah. The queen’s messengers who brought the gifts were astonished by Suliman’s kingdom and realized that their gifts were nothing compared to what Sulaiman had.
They went back to their queen and told her what they have witnessed. Thew saw Jinn, huge buildings like they have never seen, and treasures in abundance everywhere. She had no choice but to go to Sulaiman.
The Throne of Queen of Sheba
When the Queen of Sheba decided to visit Sulaiman, he sought to test her readiness to embrace the truth. He tasked his followers with bringing her magnificent throne to him before her arrival. An Ifrit of the Jinn told him I’ll bring it before you leave your session here. Another person who was present in this session who had knowledge said, ‘I will bring it before you blink’ And the thrown of the queen of Sheba Bilkis was immediately brought in front of Sulaiman. Sulaiman thanked Allah for all the blessings and the power given to him.
He then asked his assistants to disguise the thrown to see if the queen is intelligent enough to figure out it is actually her thrown or not.
When the Queen saw her throne, she recognized it and acknowledged it and said, ‘It seems like its my thrown’. She then stepped into the court of king Sulaiman, but the floors seemed like water, so she lifted her clothes revealing her legs to walk on the water ground. Sulaiman told her this is not water, it is glass, and the water is under it. She was ultimately guided to submit to the oneness of Allah and embraced the faith after witnessing the splendor and righteousness of Prophet Sulaiman.
The Passing of a Prophet
The end of Prophet Sulaiman’s life is described poignantly in the Quran. He passed away while standing, supported by his staff, as he oversaw the labor of Jinns. His death went unnoticed until an ant gnawed at his staff, causing him to fall. This moment served as a powerful reminder of human mortality and the limits of knowledge, even for the Jinns who believed they were aware of all.
Conclusion
Prophet Sulaiman remains a remarkable figure whose life embodies the principles of justice, humility, and divinely endowed wisdom. His legacy as a righteous King and Prophet endures through the lessons conveyed in the Quran and stories shared across generations. From his early display of wisdom to his unique connection with Allah’s creations, Sulaiman’s journey serves as an inspiring narrative for believers. His pursuit of righteousness and commitment to guiding his people toward the worship of Allah exemplifies the enduring principles found within the Islamic faith.
